The Rory Spence Travelling Scholarship (Rule 117)
Rory Spence was a highly respected and much loved teacher and researcher in the School of Architecture where he worked from 1989 until his untimely death in 2004.
Rory Spence had a major influence on contemporary Australian architects and on architectural scholarship, and he contributed significantly to the current level of recognition internationally of the high calibre of the Australian profession.
The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of a scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.
Rules
- An amount of $100 000 donated by the family of Rory Spence and Vos Construction & Joinery to the University of Tasmania, together with any income by way of interest earned from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called ‘The Rory Spence Travelling Scholarship’.
- The Scholarship will be awarded to a student currently studying in the School of Architecture & Design at the University of Tasmania who intends to undertake an approved period of study, or an academic program, or a course related project, interstate or overseas.
- The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
- the Head of School of Architecture & Design or nominee;
- two members of the academic staff at the School of Architecture & Design;
- Seiglinde Karl-Spence or another member of the Spence family should they wish to be involved.
- The Selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria for the Scholarship having regard to the intention of the donors.
- The value of the scholarship will be $5,000 per year or any other amount determined by the selection committee having regard to the income in the endowment.
- The Scholarship may not be awarded in any year if, in the opinion of the selection committee in its absolute discretion, no candidate is deserving of it.
- The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
- The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate on offers made and on the progress of a candidate receiving the scholarship.
