Sir Victor Burley Postgraduate Scholarship in Music (Rule 86)

Sir Victor Burley who died in 2002 aged 87, was one of Tasmania’s most celebrated engineers.  A graduate of the University of Tasmania, he went on to guide numerous innovative developments in engineering, science, and education at both a state and national level.

Sir Victor also had a lifelong involvement in tertiary education in Tasmania. He was president of TUU in his student days, served as warden of University Convocation; was director of the University’s research company and, as foundation chairman of the Tasmanian Council of Advanced Education, was instrumental in the establishment of the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education which later became a part of the University of Tasmania.

Sir Victor had a passion for music and had an enduring involvement in the affairs of the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music.  Thus his family has endowed this scholarship to encourage the development of advanced music skills, especially in the classical music area. 

Academic Senate has agreed to the foundation of an endowed scholarship.  These are the rules of the scholarship:

Rules
  1. An amount of $20,000 donated by family of Sir Victor Burley to the University of Tasmania, together with any income (by way of interest earned) from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the "Sir Victor Burley Postgraduate Scholarship in Music".
  2. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is eligible to enrol in a postgraduate course in Music at the University of Tasmania, preferably studying in the broad area of classical music.
  3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:  
    • the Head of the Conservatorium of Music or a nominee; and 
    • a member of academic staff at the Conservatorium supervising postgraduate music study
  4. A Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income of the fund of the endowment.
  5. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
