The Tasmania University Cricket Club Scholarship (Rule 103)

A number of generous supporters and past players of the Tasmania University Cricket Club have contributed to a fund to provide scholarships for talented cricketers while they study at the University of Tasmania.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of an endowed scholarship.  These are the rules:

Rules
  1. The amount of $30,000 donated by supporters and past players of the Tasmania University Cricket Club, together with any future donations from time to time and accrued interest, forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the “Tasmania University Cricket Club Scholarship”.
    • The amounts referred to in Rule 1 will, for the purposes of these rules, be referred to as ‘the fund’;
    • The income generated by the fund will be used to provide a scholarship for an eligible student at the University of Tasmania;
    • Any amount provided under Rule 2(b) above will be matched by the University of Tasmania Foundation from its General Scholarships Trust to meet the value of the scholarships offered annually through the program.
  2. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is eligible to enrol or has already enrolled in any course at the University of Tasmania who has demonstrated a commitment to the sport of cricket and is prepared to play for the Tasmania University Cricket Club during the period of the scholarship.
  3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of:
    • the President of the Tasmania University Cricket Club or nominee;
    • a member of the Tasmania University Cricket Club nominated by the Club’s management committee;
    • a nominee of the Vice-Chancellor.
  4. The award is tenable for one year, subject to the student:
    • continuing to study in a course at the University of Tasmania; and
    • making a commitment to play for the TUCC in that year.
  5. The selection committee, having regard to the terms of the endowment, will set the detailed selection criteria.  However, the committee will give preference to a student who has achieved in the top quartile in the Tasmanian Certificate of Education, or at a standard deemed equivalent by the selection committee.
  6. The selection committee may terminate the student’s award if it considers the student’s progress and commitment to be unsatisfactory.
  7. The value of the award will be determined by the selection committee from time to time having regard to the income in the fund.
  8. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures, and the method and time of payment.
  9. The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate on offers made and on the progress of candidates receiving the award.
