Warren Lee Memorial Scholarship in Engineering (Rule 112)

Warren Lee was an integral part of the Brighton Council team until his untimely death from illness in October, 2007.  Warren was an engineering graduate from the University of Tasmania and he joined Brighton Council in a part time capacity in 1993 to undertake the practical parts of his degree.  He was offered a full time position with Council following his graduation in 1996 and went on to become a respected engineer who was recognised in Tasmania as an expert in sewage reuse.  Warren displayed a strong work ethic with traits of unconstrained thinking, enthusiasm, diligence and a willingness to undertake any task no matter how difficult.

The Warren Lee Memorial Scholarship in Engineering will be available to a student enrolled in the second year of the engineering degree and who intends to pursue a career in civil engineering.

Rules
  1. An annual amount of $5,000, CPI indexed annually and donated by the Brighton Council to the University of Tasmania Foundation, will form the basis of a scholarship to be called the ‘Warren Lee Memorial Scholarship in Engineering’. The Scholarship will be initially offered for a period of up to three years after which time it will be reviewed.  The scholarship will also provide workplace experience for the recipient. 
  2. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising: 
    • Head of the School of Engineering or a nominee;  
    • General Manager of the Brighton Council or nominee.  
  3. The selection committee will be responsible for setting the detailed selection and performance criteria for the scholarship with regard to the intention of the donors in awarding the scholarship. The proposed selection criteria will be that the student: 
    • will be entering second year; 
    • intends to pursue civil engineering; 
    • displays character traits of diligence, determination and perseverance; 
    • can demonstrate need or benefit from financial support. 
  4. The Scholarship is for up to three years of the student’s course of study, subject to the student:
    • Continuing in full-time study in an undergraduate course in the School of Engineering, or in part-time study approved by the selection committee;
    • Continuing to make satisfactory progress in the opinion of the selection committee;  
    • Not receiving another scholarship through the School of Engineering, or one deemed by the selection committee, in its absolute discretion, equivalent.
  5. The selection committee may terminate the student’s award if it considers, in its absolute discretion, that the student’s progress is unsatisfactory. 
  6. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
