What happens after the Academic Misconduct Committee meeting?

The Academic Misconduct Commitee decision

You will be sent a written decision (called a determination) signed by the Committee members within 5 working days.

You should be aware that if the Academic Misconduct Committee finds you have committed academic misconduct they can impose one or more of the following penalties:

  • a reprimand
  • a reduction of marks or a cancellation of marks for that piece of assessment
  • can deem you be ineligible to sit your final exam
  • can award a lower grade or a failure for the unit
  • can require you to undertake additional work or alternative assessment tasks
  • can impose probationary, assessment or enrolment conditions
  • can fine you not more than $500
  • can exclude you from the University and suspend your enrolment permanently or for any period they think is appropriate

The determination will include a letter from Governance & Legal telling you of your appeal rights.  For more information about how to appeal See - How do I appeal a decision?

Other important things to note

If academic misconduct is proven, a comment will be added to your internal faculty record (not your academic transcript).

The Academic Misconduct Committee often order the outcome of meetings to be published as a deterrent to other students.  This is done in poster form.  Posters are put in student spaces around the University.  If a Committee recommends the publishing of the outcome of your meeting, your name and unit details will not be shown so that you cannot be identified.

If you have been excluded from the University, your enrolment will be withdrawn and an exclusion comment will be put on your faculty record.  You will not be able to enrol at UTAS during this period and any study undertaken elsewhere will not count towards your UTAS degree in this period.

If you are excluded and you are an International Student, the UTAS Compliance Officer will be notified and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship will be advised (after your appeal period has ended). This will affect your visa and you should seek assistance from either an International Student Adviser or a Student Advocate.
