What happens before an Academic Misconduct Committee meeting?

How will I know if I have to attend an Academic Misconduct Committee meeting?

  • You will receive a letter from the Head of School telling you that they have referred your matter to an Academic Misconduct Committee.
  • Staff from the Governance & Legal office will send you a letter telling you that an Academic Misconduct Committee is being organised.
  • Staff from Governance & Legal will contact you by telephone or email to arrange a time and date for you to attend the meeting.
  • You will receive a notice confirming the date, time and venue of the meeting and an agenda with all the documentation for the meeting attached.
  • The agenda papers will be sent to you five working days before the meeting date.
  • The agenda will include the names of the people the Academic Misconduct Committee have asked to interview.
  • Student Advocates are available to assist you to prepare for the meeting and can be a support person for you if you wish.

Do I have to attend the meeting?

  • It is up to you to decide whether you will attend the Academic Misconduct Committee meeting or not.
  • While you can choose not to attend, it is preferable, and to your advantage if you do attend, so the Committee can hear your point of view and understand the issues you have experienced.
  • You may, if you wish, submit a written statement to the Committee. You may do this whether you decide to attend the meeting or not.
  • If you do not wish to attend the meeting you must notify Governance & Legal staff in writing that you will not be attending and that you understand the meeting will be held in your absence (by email is acceptable).
  • If you wish to submit a written statement or any other documents to the Committee try to do so within three working days of the meeting. This will allow the Committee time to receive the documents and read them prior to the meeting.
