The University of Tasmania offered this postgraduate coursework program for the first time in 2007. It was in response to a request by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training to fund a Commercialisation Training Scheme for research higher degree candidates. The University and the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry have also combined to make this program available for members the Tasmanian community.
The objective is to provide high-quality commercialisation training for the next generation of Australian researchers and managers as a means of equipping them with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to bring new ideas, inventions and innovations to market.
The program provides for significant elements of practical, non-lecture based learning where candidates are given the opportunity to participate in team-based learning exercises. A unit consists of seven 3-hour workshops held fortnightly over the standard University teaching semester. Workshops will be held on Saturdays in order to minimise clashes with candidates' other commitments.
