What is a 'Masters with Specialisation'?
The Masters with Specialisation enables students to tailor a Masters program that combines core studies in business with another recognised field of study. To qualify for a Masters with Specialisation students effectively complete a standard Masters program, supplemented by additional studies in their chosen specialist area. Masters with Specialisation courses take four semesters of full-time study or can take be studied on a part-time basis over a longer period.
Specialised Masters programs are available through the Master of Business Administration, the Master of International Business, the Master of Marketing, and the Master of Professional Accounting.
A Masters with Specialisation gives students a double-barrelled degree, with the name of the award specifying both the base degree and their chosen area of specialisation.
Specialisations in Management, Accounting & related fields
Specialisations may involve the study of particular topics in the fields of management and accounting. Such specialisations are for students wishing to broaden the base of their degree and/or to develop more advanced skills in a particular area of business.
Specialisations in other fields: becoming a manager in one’s profession
Specialisations may also be drawn from outside the management and accounting fields, for example in Police Studies, Asian Languages and Studies, Journalism, and a range of Science, Health Science, and Education disciplines. Such specialisations are particularly suitable for professionals seeking to move into higher-level management and executive positions, and who need to undertake management training along with 'refresher' studies in the discipline of their first degree. For example, the MBA (Aquaculture) is specifically aimed at aquaculture graduates.
Specialisations in other fields - constructing suites of complementary skills
Masters with Specialisations are also valuable for those who are looking for new skills to complement their management or accounting training. For example, a student with no prior business training or experience in studying a foreign language might undertake a program that combines the core International Business program with a suite of studies in Asian languages. This would lead to the award of 'Master of International Business (Asian Languages & Studies)' -- just the program for running a small business and getting an enterprise involved in the robust economies of Australia's near neighbours!
Length and structure of program
All Masters with Specialisation programs take four semesters if studied full time; longer if part time. The structures of the different awards are shown below.
The units taken in a field of specialisation need to add up to a total of at least 50%. This is equivalent to one semester of full-time study. Units at UTAS normally have a 12.5% load, but some offerings have a 25% load.
Exactly when in the program core units and specialisation units are taken will depend on timetables and will vary from program to program. Students will need to consult their program coordinators for a particular schedule of study.
