These programs prepare students to practice competently in a variety of maternity settings, in accordance with the international defined role and scope of practice of the midwife.
The Masters component will provide graduates with a basis for advanced studies in areas such as midwifery, family and child health and women's health. It will encourage graduates to base their practice on current research.
The Graduate Diploma of Midwifery is offered part-time, and is available on a statewide basis. As part of this course, students are employed to work in midwifery at 50% of full-time equivalent in year 2.

Each hospital has a different selection process; students may be required to be interviewed. If applicants are unsuccessful in obtaining their first preference, the University will contact them in regard to their second preference. A 5 day compulsory workshop is conducted prior to the commencement of semester 1 in year 2 of the course.
The Australian College of Midwives and the Nursing Board of Tasmania have documentation that provides standards of practice for midwives. These are the Nursing Board of Tasmania's Code of Practice (PDF 75 Kb), ACMI Code of Ethics (PDF 27 Kb) and AMCI Competency Standards for Midwives (PDF 50 Kb).

The aim of this course is to prepare advanced practice midwives for leadership roles in a range of practice settings.
The program allows students to develop new skills and in-depth knowledge in midwifery, whilst offering career opportunities to interact with peers.
