asterix How do I claim credit for previous study or work experience?

If you wish to apply for credit for units passed at another tertiary institution, after you have applied for Admission via on-line application you will need to send a credit application to the Admissions office, which you can email or mail, along with the required information detailed below.

It is unlikely that many, if any, of the Faculty Offices will have a complete collection of handbook/calendars of all tertiary institutions. Therefore, to ensure prompt assessment of your credit application, you must send with your Application for Admission the following supporting documentation:

  1. Unit/subject outlines or a syllabus. Outlines should comprise:
    1. a description of the unit from the relevant year handbook;
    2. weighting/credit point value;
    3. assessment eg exam (70%), practical work (30%); and
    4. teaching pattern eg Semester 1 with 3 hour lectures and 1 hour tutorial per week
  2. A copy of the other institution's course structure for the same degree eg BA. The course structure should advise of the other institution's credit point/weight system (eg to complete a BA degree at UTAS, students will enrol in units totalling 100% weight in each year of the three year course (total 300%). You should also note that there are time restrictions on the age of prior study for which Faculties will award credit.

Several courses have credit articulation arrangements with TAFE.

If you apply for admission after the relevant closing date or your documents do not provide sufficient detail for accurate assessment, the credit assessment will be delayed until the required detail is provided.

asterix What is the difference between a research degree and coursework degree?

A Postgraduate Coursework award degree is not a research award course. A coursework degree is usually comprised of a proportion of original, supervised research and other forms of instruction and learning.

A Postgraduate Research degree is comprised of 100% University approved independent research activity/study and responsibility for maintaining contact with the graduate research coordinator or nominated supervisor.

asterix What scholarships can I apply for?

While you can apply for more than one category you will be eligible to hold only one scholarship. A single application will allow you to be considered for all Tasmania Scholarships for which you might be eligible.

Applications for postgraduate coursework scholarships are available from the Tasmania Scholarships Office or on the University website.
