Town & Gown Hobart

  • The Town & Gown procession of graduands and staff through city streets is a special feature of the December graduations in Hobart.
  • The procession is held before the 3.00pm ceremony only, but all candidates graduating in Hobart are invited to participate.
  • If your ceremony is at 3.00pm please assemble at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), Castray Esplanade, at 1.45pm. Arrival by 1.15pm is strongly recommended. There will be ushers to assist and direct you.
  • If you are not participating in the 3.00pm ceremony but you wish to take part in the procession, assemble at IMAS before 1.45pm. There will be ushers to assist and direct you. You will process behind the 3.00 pm graduands and will be dismissed at the Federation Concert Hall, to return later at the appointed time for your ceremony.
  • If you are an academic participating in the Town & Gown procession, please assemble at IMAS.
  • From 1.45-2.10pm graduands and staff will be briefed and assembled in order for the procession by the University staff.
  • At 2.15pm the procession, with police escort and band, will move from IMAS, then proceed along Castray Esplanade into Morrison Street, turning right at the Elizabeth Street intersection, onto Franklin Wharf and then turning left towards Constitution Dock. The procession will then proceed over Victoria Dock Bridge, turning left onto Hunter Street, crossing Davey Street to arrive at the Federation Concert Hall.
  • Once you are seated in the Federation Concert Hall, there will be a brief rehearsal by University staff.
  • If you choose not to process please be seated at the Federation Concert Hall by 2.15pm.
  • If the weather is inclement, check the Graduation website home page to find out if the event has been cancelled. If it has been cancelled proceed directly to the Federation Concert Hall and be seated by 2.30pm.
