This on-campus course is offered by the Faculty of Arts through the School of Asian Languages and Studies on both the Launceston and Hobart campuses, and may be studied on a full-time basis for 3 semesters over a single year or a part-time basis over two years. It may be taken on a full fee-paying basis.
These course rules and specifications apply to students commencing the MAsianSt in 2006. For students who commenced prior to 2006, the applicable course rules are those from the year of commencement. i.e. students who commenced in 2004 should refer to the 2004 Handbook.
Admission & Prerequisites
Students are normally expected to have a minimum of a bachelor degree of the University of Tasmania or of another university or tertiary institution which is deemed equivalent, standard English qualifications for entry to Australian universities, and competence in an Asian language as appropriate to the specific program. In exceptional circumstances the Faculty may admit a person with a tertiary qualification and relevant employment experience.
The aim of the Master of Asian Studies is to enable students from a variety of academic backgrounds to gain knowledge of Asia and expertise in one of the disciplines of Asian Studies, such as theories of political and social change in Asian societies or Asian literatures, which may be built on in further postgraduate research.

A student who has completed or partly completed units in other honours or postgraduate courses from the University or another approved tertiary institution can apply for credit, up to a maximum of one-third of the course.
