In this unit students will engage in an historical and contextual analysis of news images, focusing on documentary photography but also analysing illustration and painting. News images add meaning to news narratives, but at the same time they generate their own meanings. Students will study news images in the context of representation, photographic truth and ideological discourses. Students will be introduced to the works of significant photojournalists, cartoonists and news illustrators.
One 3,500-word essay (40%), a two-hour-exam (50%) and tutorial participation (10%)
