This unit has twofold focuses: language and philosophy. The language part focuses on reading, interpreting and understanding sample writings of original classical Chinese texts, from
Shi Jing [Book of Odes] to Tang/Song poetry. The philosophy part highlights three streams of Chinese classical thoughts: Confucianism, Daoism and Legalism, with a brief discussion on Buddhism.
Students will be introduced to a range of texts from classical Chinese literature. They will also be introduced to modern and contemporary uses of classical Chinese terms, idoms and literary forms. There will be a focus on understanding and translating classical Chinese texts into modern Chinese and English.
Finishing this unit will enable the students to move on to HMC315 in the second semester.
ASSESSMENT: group presentation (10%, Chinese/English); mid-term exam (10%, Chinese/English); research essay (3,000 words in Chinese or 1,500 words in English, 40%); final exam (40%, Chinese/English)
