After nearly 30 years of political and economic extremes under Maoism, since the late 1970s, the People's Republic of China entered an era of free-market economic reform and has undergone dramatic social and economic transformations. This unit discusses major perspectives and discourses that inform not only ordinary people's lives in China today, but also the process and impact of China's growth into one of world's leading powers. The topics to be addressed include post-Mao economic reform; state welfare and educational reforms; environment; urbanization; China's international relationships, as well as state development policies.
