This unit is a survey of the major developments in Japanese film from the 1930s to the present, studying the works of the major directors such as Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kurosawa, Itami, and Kore'eda, etc. Issues such as the politics of film, gender representation, the negotiation of modernity and tradition, language, colonialism and post-colonialism and the emergence of anime will be covered. The unit is taught in English and is open to non-Japanese speakers with all films shown with subtitles
ASSESSMENT: Folio of 5 worksheets (30%), 2500 word essay (30%), 2-hr written examination (40%)
1 lecture and 1 tutorial weekly (13 wks). An extra optional two hours of film viewing that students are strongly encouraged to attend is also scheduled.
