Effective management of the natural environment is one of the most important challenges of our time. This field-based unit explores the ecology and conservation of forests, woodlands, grasslands and freshwater streams in a natural setting. Through field exploration, lectures, and a variety of group activities, students will learn skills to assess, measure and protect natural environments. Students will become practised in the skills of vegetation and animal surveys, identification methods, the use of global positioning systems (GPS), topographic surveying and mapping of landscapes; measurement of local climates, interpreting soil profiles, data analysis and report writing.
ASSESSMENT: 2-hr exam (30%), 2-hr practical exam (30%), field assessment (20%), 1500 word report (20%)
