In these specifications, 'Faculty' means the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology.
The Faculty may accept as a candidate for the award of Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems a person who has qualified for admission to a bachelor degree in any discipline at the University of Tasmania or holds a degree or other tertiary qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent for this purpose.
Candidates for the certificate shall complete the requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than one semester of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than two years, from the time of first enrolment.
To qualify for the certificate, the candidate shall pass 50% from Schedules A and B provided that:
a compulsory core of 25% is completed from Schedule A; and
25% of elective units is completed from Schedule B.
The units which may be included in a course for the certificate shall, unless otherwise approved by the Dean, be in accordance with Schedules A and B accompanying these specifications.
Units may be counted towards the certificate only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the Faculty.
Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the certificate.
In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the Dean in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 4.
The candidate may not count any Terminating Passes towards the certificate.
Credit for Previous Studies
Passes in subjects or units by candidates towards incomplete postgraduate coursework studies in another course may be credited towards the certificate, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the certificate. Credit will not be awarded in recognition of subjects or units studied in an undergraduate degree or units studied in a completed postgraduate course of study even if the units are included in the schedules to the certificate.
The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications.
These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2004 and shall apply to all candidates for the certificate, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.
The approved abbreviation for the Graduate Certificate of Geographic Information Systems shall be GradCertGIS.
