The Bachelor of Education (Primary) is a pre-service teaching program which aims to prepare beginning teachers to work in the early years of schooling, Prep to Year 8, and to provide a base for continuing professional learning in educational theory and practice.

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) course qualifies graduates to teach children from Prep through to the junior years in a high school setting (grades 7 and 8). As the Bachelor of Education (Primary) course is accredited through the TRB, it is mutually recognised in all other states, meaning that in mainland states you are also qualified to teach from Prep (or equivalent) to grade 8. A particular strength of this course is the broad base that it provides in terms of equipping you to teach across a wide range of grade levels within formal schooling contexts (primary and junior secondary schools).

The program is available internally at Launceston and Cradle Coast campuses and externally/fully on-line from anywhere in the world, either full-time or part-time.

Normal minimum University admission requirements apply.

International students will require an overall IELTS average of 7.0 with no band lower than 6.5 and DEAP overall 70% (65% writing).

Course Objectives

Students in this program will graduate with a professional qualification and preparation that meets national expectations and standards. In this degree graduates are prepared for recruitment in systems throughout Tasmania and Australia. Through experiencing an internationalised curriculum our students will graduate with a global perspective and an enhanced capacity to teach overseas and experience the world whilst working. The degree program is informed by core theoretical knowledge, evidence-based practice and underpinned by a strong theory-practice nexus.The degree program is designed and enacted in collaboration with appropriate employing authorities. At the core of thedegree is the pre-service teacher who is educated to bring their work:

  • Areasoned and critical perspective;
  • The capacity towork effectivelyin highly diverse contexts;
  • Curricular and pedagogical competence;
  • With the capacity to be resilientpractitioners and lifelong learners;
  • A collaborative and contextual approach.

The course content and practical experience provides theoretical and practical opportunities to practice what is learned in a safe and supportive environment.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) will be qualified to teach in public and private sector schools in most states of Australia fromPrep to Grade 8. Graduates are also highly sought in communication-based jobs in industry training, call centres and public relations.

Articulation to/from Course

Students who have undertaken an appropriate course at another Australian or overseas institution of further education or TAFE college may apply to receive credit for such study. Applications for credit can be made upon application to the Bachelor of Education (Primary) course.

Miscellaneous Information

Internally/On-Campus: Face-to-faceclasses will be conducted on either Newnham campus in Launceston or Cradle Coast campus in Burnie and online

Externally/Fully online: All units in Bachelor of Education (Primary) are available fully online.

International students can only study the equivalent of one quarter of their degree on-line.

Professional Experience: Undergraduate students must be available to attend unpaid professional experience at schools on full-time basis for a number of weeks each year, totalling a minimum of 80 days over 4 years. Teachers Registration Board (TRB) Good Character Check is required for school placements.

Professional experience is embedded into the four units; Foundations of Teaching, Planning for Positive Behaviour,Inclusive Practices in Educational Settings, and Preparing for the Profession. For placements each semester, students are assigned a University mentor and a Colleague Teacher. In the four units aligned with Professional Experience, students are required to successfully complete their assessment tasks and to show competence in the school setting. The assessment criteria for these four units are signed by the Unit Coordinator and the Colleague Teacher.

Exchanges:Opportunity exists for students to seek a one-semester exchange with approved universities around the world. Students who are interested in applying for a one-semester exchange negotiate their request with the Course Coordinator.

The School of Education strongly encourages all students to maintain regular contact with an educational context. For this reason, volunteering in an educational setting or classroom is highly recommended for all students, regardless of study mode or pattern of attendance.

Literacy, Numeracy, and ICT Competency Tests: It is highly recommended that all pre-service teacher education students undertake the literacy, numeracy and ICT competency tests prior to graduation.
