The Bachelor of Education is a 4 year pre service teaching program intended to provide teaching practice and skills to enable the beginning teacher to embrace the secondary years of teaching (grade 7 grade 12), with the exception of the Health & Physical Education specialisation which prepares for Kindergarten to grade 12.

The course will lay a foundation for further professional development in both theory and practice of education. The program is offered internally at Launceston, full time or part time.

Admission & Prerequisites

Normal minimum University admission requirements apply.

The School of Education strongly encourages all students to maintain regular contact with an educational context. For this reason, volunteering in an educational setting or classroom is highly recommended for all students, regardless of study mode or pattern of attendance.

International students will require an overall IELTS average of 7.0 with no band lower than 6.5 and DEAP overall 70% (65% writing).

Course Objectives

The program is informed by core theoretical knowledge, evidence-based practice and underpinned by a strong theory-practice nexus enacted in collaboration with appropriate employing authorities. At the core of the program is the pre-service teacher who is educated to:

  • Have ownership of a reasoned and critical perspective
  • Have capacity to operate inclusively in highly diverse contexts
  • Have curricular and pedagogical competence
  • Be appropriately collaborative and context-honouring in a community of learners
  • Have capacity to be resilient learners who make evidence-based lifelong contributions to their field

The course content and practical experience provides theoretical and practical opportunities to practice what is learned in a safe and supportive environment.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Education will be qualified to teach in public and private sector schools from Grade 7 to Grade 12. Graduates with the Health & Physical Education specialisation will also be qualified to teach in public and private schools from Kindergarten Grade 6.

Articulation to/from Course

Students who have undertaken an appropriate course at another Australian or overseas institution of further education or TAFE college may apply to receive credit for such study. Applications for credit can be made upon application to the Bachelor of Education course.

Miscellaneous Information

Internally/On-Campus: The Bachelor of Education is offered at the Newnham campus in Launceston. Special facilities in Launceston include computer laboratories and speciality teaching spaces for drama, visual arts design & technology, cooking and human movement. Some units can be studied on-line.

International students can only study the equivalent of one quarter of their degree on-line.

Professional Experience: Undergraduate students must be available to attend unpaid professional experience at schools on full-time basis for a number of weeks each year, totalling a minimum of 80 days over 4 years. Teachers Registration Board Good Character Check is required for school placements.

Professional experience is embedded into the four units; Foundations of Teaching, Planning for Positive Behaviour; Ethics, Inclusive Practices in Education Settings; and Preparing for the Profession. For placements each semester students are assigned a supervisor who is a Faculty academic staff member and a colleague teacher from the school. The units require students to successfully complete assignments and show competence in the school setting across established criteria signed off by the academic supervisor and colleague teacher.

Exchanges:Opportunity exists for one-semester exchange with approved universities around the world by negotiation with Course Co-ordinator. The Faculty also has a formal exchange agreement with Malmo University in Sweden for one semester exchange in the third year of the course.

Literacy, Numeracy, and ICT Competency Tests: It is highly recommended that all pre-service teacher education students undertake the literacy, numeracy and ICT competency tests prior to graduation.
