This unit will build knowledge about narrative and serial forms of picture-making through investigations into artists' books or other sequential art forms such as editions, graphic novels, animation, illustration, film and print. The unit will also build skills in material thinking and how push artists books and serial art forms to their to their formal and conceptual limits. For the unit you will develop self-directed and cross-disciplinary projects based on the convergence of image and text and in which the form becomes an integral and dynamic part of the work.
Project work is supported by demonstration workshops and group critiques. Journal work is central to project development and you are required to keep a record of your ideas, insights, concepts, methods and learning processes and contextualize these through study of works of other artists and innovative examples of practice.
Summative assessment will be given after week 3 (Project Proposal 10%) and week 6 (Reflective Statement and Class Presentation 20%). A final grade and numerical mark will be awarded after final assessment (Folio of Project Work 70%) at the end of semester.
3 hr studio session weekly, and an expectation of at least an additional 3 hrs independent practical work per week (13 weeks)
