Key Semester Dates
Final WW Date*
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see Withdrawal dates explained for more information).
This unit offers the opportunity to use image, text and mark-making processes as a means of exploring dynamic forms of communication. You will explore composition, materials, visual interpretation and narrative construction through the following formats: illustration, experimental image-making, books and storyboards and other forms of visualizing information. Information is increasingly communicated through narrative and interpretative communication and forms - information and research can be visualized literally, symbolically, subversively, ironically or as combination of these approaches. For this unit you will undertake a series of set projects designed to cross design boundaries and to redefine the nature of contemporary illustration.
You will also investigate historical and contemporary issues in illustration and issues of creative authorship, design frameworks, meaning and context.
Summative assessment will be given after week 3 (Research Presentation 15%). A final grade and numerical mark will be awarded after final assessment (Collaborative Project 25% and Project Work 60%) at the end of semester.
TEACHING PATTERN: 3 hrs tutorial/practical demonstration weekly, plus an expectation of at least an additional 3 hrs independent practical work weekly (13 weeks)
