2013 HEF208 Introduction to French Literature

Students discover French history and culture through the analysis of well-known excerpts of French literature, with a particular focus on extracts from some of the major works of French literature from the late 18th century onwards. Selected readings will include extracts from prose, poetry, and theatre in French, with "close reading" of excerpts of the most representative works and authors. Students will gain an awareness of different historical periods and their various literary productions, as well as a basic understanding of some fundamental analytical concepts involved in the study of literature in French.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT: 2 x commentary on a single text, or a commentary on a poem, of approximately 1000 words (10% x 2); 1 x 2,000 word essay (30%); 1 x final exam (50%).

TEACHING PATTERN: 1 x 1hr lecture; 1 x 1hr tutorial (13 weeks)
