About Census Dates

This unit examines the position and experiences of young people in contemporary society. It provides an analysis of the social construction of 'youth' and challenges some of the negative discourses which tend to position young people as inferior to adults; as irresponsible risk-takers who seek to shirk their responsibilities. Social and cultural diversity among youth is highlighted through an examination of youth subcultures. The aims of the unit are: (1) to provide an overview of the ways in which key social structures (such as institutions and cultural discourses) shape the opportunities available to young people - while also exploring young people's expressions of agency; (2) to examine social division and difference among youth (for example considering the role of class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, geography) and (3) to evaluate the role of public policy and legislation in shaping the varied experiences and opportunities available to young people.
