DESCRIPTION This is a 'capstone' (highly recommended) third year unit for all students undertaking a major in International Relations. It surveys the major theoretical perspectives on international relations and explores how they can assist us to understand world politics. In particular, it examines the major traditions of realism and liberalism in international relations, in addition to Marxist and constructivist approaches. In addition to studying the main assumptions made by each conceptual approach, we will also examine practical case studies relating to important current issues such as war and security, globalisation, poverty, power and polarity, international organisations, and justice and human rights. Students will then be able to evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of the theories under review, gaining a superior knowledge of international relations in the process.
