SPECIAL NOTE: This unit is intended for teachers of history in Tasmanian schools
This unit will help teachers convey an understanding of the past to students and do so by the development of historical skills and historical thinking and by building confidence in analysing and reading a variety of sources. The new Australian Curriculum for History outlines key skills and knowledge to be developed and this unit addresses these requirements by introducing history as a distinctive form of understanding the human experience. Students will learn how historical knowledge is created and examine the ways that history can be presented in class. Students will gain an understanding of the relevance of history to the present and the future. Students will learn to use the language of the discipline such as cause and effect; origins and consequences; contestability and revisionism; evidence; continuity and change; chronological and thematic approaches; narrative, stories, and historical imagination; contextualisation, contingency and historical agency.
