This three-year full-time or six-year part-time course is offered by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and is available at Hobart.
Admission & Prerequisites
Admission is based on minimum University entrance requirements. Students are encouraged to study some of the following TCE subjects:

Subject prerequisites apply within the degree to first-year units in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. These prerequisites can also be met by completion of appropriate bridging units provided by the University of Tasmania, namely:
KMA003 Mathematics Foundation Unit, KRA001 Chemistry Foundation Unit or KYA004 Physics Foundation Unit.
Antarctic and Southern Ocean is one of the University's theme areas and it is an area that is unique to the University of Tasmania, which has a large Antarctic research community and annually enrols large numbers of higher degree students in this area. The educational objectives of the new Bachelor of Antarctic Science degree are to provide students with knowledge, competencies, skills and awareness of a variety of subjects linked together by the common theme of Antarctic science. The course will have two streams - Antarctic Life Science or Antarctic Physical Sciences - allowing for different emphases in specialisation.
This course specifically aims to prepare students for employment in either scientific or policy-related areas. Students will also be well prepared to continue their studies into an Honours-level program with the Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies and onwards to a research higher degree.
Career outcomes are similar to the Bachelor of Science, but as this course focuses on Antarctic Science, it is particularly suitable for students planning a scientific career and who wish to contribute to the understanding of the Antarctica and its surrounding oceans. The Australian Antarctic Division, which administers Australia_s wide-ranging activities in Antarctic and subantarctic regions and is headquartered in Hobart, would be the most significant employer of research scientists along with CSIRO Marine Science, ACE Co-operative Research Centre and others. Students with a science background will also be able to foster careers in the policy area relating to the Antarctic.
