A Master of Environmental Studies research degree enables a candidate to undertake a program of research and advanced study in a specialist field. The research takes place over 2 years of study or equivalent part-time and normally results in a thesis or equivalent of traditionally circa 50-60,000 words (depending on the discipline), written in English.
The research topic will reflect the candidates' own interests and the research expertise of their supervisors. In the School of Geography and Environmental Studies there is extensive research expertise in biogeography, geomorphology and climatology; environmental planning and management; cultural and political geography. Further information on the research areas of supervisors in these disciplines is available from the Web Access Research Portal (WARP) site.
The campus of study will vary depending on the location of the candidate, the supervisor and the research field.
Students will apply their skills to a range of environmental problems and develop new skill sets in the disciplines of geography and environmental studies. The degree will allow students to: expand their knowledge of natural and cultural values; manage and rehabilitate ecosystems; examine the social, cultural and institutional contexts in which environments are managed; and apply methods to address biodiversity conservation and sustainability.
A Master of Environmental Studies degree is an entry to a doctorate at a university and graduates are highly sought after for positions across the spectrum of available careers. Master of Environmental Studies graduates in geography and environmental studies pursue a range of positions in conserving, managing, interpreting and rehabilitating natural, rural and urban environments. Graduates work for local, state and federal governments, international agencies, community organisations, environmental nongovernment organisations and private consulting businesses.
