Applied Computing, Mathematics - Department of Applied Computing & Mathematics at Launceston

The Department of Applied Computing & Mathematics is responsible for all Applied Computing courses and for majors and minors in Applied Computing and Mathematics which are taken as part of other degree programs available at Launceston. Students should consult the Department's booklet, which provides more detailed information about unit selection, and should discuss their proposed programs with the course coordinator.

Applied Computing
Applied Computing is a relatively new discipline which is involved with rapidly-developing technology. There are good career opportunities for professionals with highly developed skills in specialised computing areas (e.g. systems design, network management) and for those with a combination of skills in computing and other areas (e.g. business, geography, statistics). Core units of the Bachelor of Applied Computing course provide a thorough introduction to the theory and practice of computing (in both computer science and information systems) and help students develop the ability to apply this knowledge to the formulation and solution of real problems. Elective units are more advanced and are designed to produce graduates capable of specialising in a wide range of professional computing areas. Students receive a broad base of computing knowledge on which to build. Graduates are able to change the emphasis of their careers as opportunities and interests develop or to pursue higher studies at the Honours, Masters, or Doctoral level. A Bachelor of Applied Computing is professionally recognised at Level 1 by the Australian Computer Society. The department offers applied computing majors and minors for Bachelor degrees in Applied Science, Commerce, Arts, and Education. Students undertaking a major in computing study a total of eight computing units from both core and electives. A computing major is professionally recognised at Level 2 by the Australian Computer Society. A minor study four core units provides students with an introduction to computing theory and practice.

Mathematics
Mathematics is an indispensable tool of description and analysis in the physical, biological and social sciences, an important adjunct to synthesis and design in technology, and a significant component of contemporary culture. As a discipline it develops the abilities of identifying relevant variables and their relationships, making and evaluating assumptions, and modelling real situations so as to solve problems.
Mathematics can be studied as a major or minor within the degree programs of Applied Computing, Applied Science, Humanities, and Education.
The sequence of units for major studies in mathematics is intended to provide, in the first two years, the essential concepts and methods to support theoretical understanding in both the fuzzy and crisp sciences. At the same time, there is an emphasis on applications and the gradual development of a modelling approach. In the third year, students are exposed to a broader range of topics, including a range of mathematical and statistical models, and are expected to integrate skills in scholarship, reporting, mathematical modelling and analytic and numerical solution.

Mathematics major units are: KXA171, 172, 271, 272, 371, 372, 373, 374.

The first four of these can be chosen for a minor sequence in mathematics.

A minor in Applied Statistics is available and comprises the units KXA171, 272, 372, 374 or KXA165, 166, 372, 374.

Special purpose mathematics units are: KXA161, 162, 163, 164, 165, 166, 262.

The prescribed texts listed are those used at the time of this publication; however, they may be changed to provide the best available choice. Students must obtain a booklist from the department office at the beginning of each semester before purchasing any textbooks.

KXA101 Business Computing

Provides an understanding of the functions of and relationship between the component parts of a computer and those applications which are suited to computerisation; and develops an understanding of the importance of data communications in the business environment. The systems development process is considered and a study made of the main trends concerning the application of small computers to the workplace. The practical component imparts a working knowledge of an integrated Word Processing/Spreadsheet/Database package.

KXA102 Programming & Problem Solving

Introduces programming, and is a core unit in applied computing courses. The unit prepares students for second and later year units which cover advanced program design and programming techniques. The emphasis is placed on a careful, disciplined approach to problem solving. Students learn to design simple algorithms and apply them in computer programs which are well structured and well documented. Programs are written in a high level programming language such as C++.

KXA103 Introduction to Operating Systems

Provides practical experience and understanding of the structure of at least two interactive operating systems used in other units - their general operation, their file systems and the manipulation of their file structure, the use of system and other programs to modify and manage the systems data, and the use of the systems command interpreter to load and run programs and sequences of programs. Lectures cover general topics in operating systems, as well as topics specific to the two currently operating systems being studied: MS/PC DOS and UNIX. Practical work involves intensive use of DOS for the first half-semester, and of UNIX for the second half-semester. Frequent small assignments are set for students to carry out in their own time.

KXA104 Fundamentals of Computing

Introduces basic ideas and techniques of discrete structures (mathematics) which are applicable to problems in computing. Topics include: logic, Boolean algebra, sets, regulations, graphs and proof.

KXA105 Computer Concepts

Introduces the components and operations used by computers beginning at the hardware level and progressing through machine instructions to the operating system. The unit covers topics such as: architecture; micro- programming; machine and assembly languages; and operating systems.

KXA106 Business Applications Development

Provides an understanding of the development of business applications, including a study of typical business applications, their interrelationships and their use in the overall business environment. This study of applications is supported by application development tools and process including: the use of a business-oriented programming language; file and database organisation; development team organisation and management; programming standards; and testing strategies. Lectures cover general issues of application design and development, and include a brief introduction to the programming language. Practical tutorial sessions lead from these general studies into the development of full-scale working business systems. Some time is spent on working in teams and on modifying existing programs - as an induction into real-world business application development.

KXA171 Mathematics I

Is the first unit in the mathematics sequence and provides an introduction to several areas of mathematics of immediate applicability in other fields. The theme of mathematical modelling which pervades the sequence is initiated, beginning with direct applications of theory and with the formalising of simplified problems. Studies cover differential calculus and applications, integral calculus - techniques up to partial fractions; applications to areas, moments, volumes, arc lengths. Solution of first-order separable differential equations; linear algebra - solution of systems of linear equations by Gauss-Jordan reduction, and the inverse matrix; determinants; complex numbers up to de Moivre's theory; real functions up to inverse hyperbolic functions; and the principles of graphing data.

KXA172 Mathematics II

Provides an understanding of: techniques of differentiation and integration, as applied to a wide range of elementary functions; rigorous definitions of limit, continuity, derivative, and the relevance of these definitions; applications of standard techniques in the solution of ordinary first order differential equations; numerical integration; applications of the basic properties of geometric vectors; and basic features of vector spaces as abstract structures. Lectures cover limits, hyperbolic and circular substitutions in integration, partial differentiation, first order and linear second order homogeneous differential equations, sequences and series, vectors, vector spaces, and linear operators.
