School of Medicine

Responding to you

In 1965, the School of Medicine was created in response to the needs of the community. There was a workforce shortage of doctors in Tasmania, so the School of Medicine was established to specialise in medical education.

50 years on, we continue to respond to you.

We recognise that healthcare is so much more than medicine and doctors. Our community benefits from a whole team of healthcare specialists who work together to get the best results for you. In 2014, we joined forces and today the School of Medicine incorporates medicine, pharmacy, psychology and paramedicine.

At the School of Medicine you can change lives by learning from the best educators, undertaking research with the best researchers, all in the latest facilities, and incorporating the most exciting innovations.

Amazing Results

Our results speak for themselves. In 2013, 100% of our undergraduate Medicine and Pharmacy students went on to find employment or further study. In 2014, two of our paramedicine graduates were picked up by the British Ambulance Service in the UK. We've even had graduates who have entered into research at the University of Oxford. Read about our alumni and current students in Student Stories.

Global reach

We are based in the $148 million Medical Science Precinct in Hobart, but we teach everywhere. Medical students could end up at one of three clinical schools across Tasmania; Paramedicine students can study in Tasmania or NSW. We have a Psychology Clinic that offer free services to the community. We teach in aged care facilities, use the latest simulation technology including a model pharmacy dispensing unit and paramedic van, and we send our students all around the world to develop their skills and to learn among different health settings including Singapore, London, Canada and Cambodia. Find out more about our facilities on the campus page.
