University of Tasmania medical students are inviting people to help improve the lives of women who have little or no assistance during childbirth throughout the world, through a birthing kit assembly night, to be held at the Launceston Clinical School on Tuesday May 8.
The kits comprising of soap, a plastic sheet, gloves, gauze, cord ties and a sterile blade, are distributed by Birthing Kit Foundation Australia to countries throughout Asia, Africa, The Pacific and The Caribbean.
With more than 300,000 women estimated to die each year during childbirth, mainly due to preventable infections, the birthing kits can play an important role in improving the health of women and newborns worldwide.
