University of Tasmania’s Menzies Institute for Medical Research Director Professor Alison Venn has been appointed to the new Council of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
An internationally renowned population health expert with broad experience in chronic disease, Professor Venn is well known for the partnerships and collaborations she has forged with Government, clinicians and the community, as well as through her national and international standing as an epidemiologist.
Professor Venn throughout her career has been awarded more than $30 million in research funding and has had more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles published.
Professor Venn's current research has a focus on the prevention and treatment of obesity and the factors in childhood that affect the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes in later life.
Professor Venn said she considered it a ‘great privilege’ to be part of the NHMRC Council.
“NHMRC has been central to the development of Australia’s capability and excellence in health and medical research for many years and I consider it a great privilege to be able to contribute to the Council’s work,” she said.
“As Director of the Menzies Institute for Medical Research I am passionate about enabling our talented researchers to make the best contributions they can to improve the health of the community through research.
“This role with NHMRC Council will allow me to take this passion to the national stage.”
Comprising two thirds of female appointees and a diverse membership with a broad range of expertise and experience, the council will advise the NHMRC on health matters for a three-year term.
The NHMRC is an Australian funding body for medical research established to develop and maintain health standards and is responsible for implementing the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992.
