Researchers at the University of Tasmania are running a new study about long-term health outcomes in people who use strong prescription opioids to manage chronic pain.
In particular, the researchers are interested in understanding how use of strong opioids might affect cognitive functioning (e.g., memory) over time.
The outcomes of this research may assist in better informing individuals considering opioid treatment for pain.
The study involves attending 4 x 60 minute laboratory sessions over the course of 12 months (baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months).
In each session, participants will be asked about medications and pain level, and will complete paper- and computer-based cognitive tasks (e.g., remembering lists).
All sessions will take place at the Sandy Bay campus (Hobart). Participants will be reimbursed $160 for their time.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- Are aged 18-65
- Currently experience chronic pain
- Have started using strong opioids (e.g., Endone, Targin) within the past 3 months (12 weeks)
- Are not currently diagnosed with cancer
- Are not currently being treated for an opioid dependence disorder
