Career Path

Dr McMullen has an extensive career in tertiary (undergraduate & postgraduate) nursing and paramedic education. She has worked for over 25 years in critical care settings (A&E, Intensive Care) in metropolitan and rural hospitals. Dr McMullen has held leadership and management positions within health and tertiary sectors. She is the Chair and National Director of the Australian & New Zealand College of Paramedicine, member of the Education subcommittee of the Council of Ambulance Authorities, and a member of the Australian Resuscitation Council (NSW Branch).

Teaching Interests

Dr McMullen teaches across all units within paramedic degree. she has expertise in cardiology, physical assessment, medical emergencies, paediatrics & obstetric emergencies, mental health. She currently teaches into Medical Emergencies for Out-of-Hospital Practice 1/2 (CAA205/206), Mental Health Care in Out of Hospital Practice (CAA210), and Obstetrics and Paediatrics in Paramedic Practice (CAA307).

Dr McMullen has extensive experience in simulation (including special effects make-up) and inter professional learning. Partnerships include th School of Health Sciences (formerly School of Nursing & Midwifery), School of Medicine- including Divisions of Psychiatry, Pharmacy and Medicine.

Research Interests

Dr McMullen lists her research areas as paramedicine, critical care nursing, education psychology, and professional development. Her research topics include mental health, chronic pain, time, professionalism in paramedicine, and simulation. Key collaborators are Ambulance Tasmania, NSW Ambulance, Australian & New Zealand College of Paramedicine, College of Paramedics U.K., and Paramedics Australia.
