Prizes and Scholarships

Every year prizes, awards and scholarships are presented to Pharmacy students who are deserving of recognition and/or assistance.

Below is a list of prizes, awards and scholarships available specifically for Bachelor of Pharmacy students - grouped by year. Students are only required to apply for those prizes that specify an application process. For all other prizes, the student whom best meets the criteria outlined will receive the award.

First Year

Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Tasmanian Branch) Prize
This prize is for the student with the highest aggregate mark in their first year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree course. To be eligible for the award the student must have completed year 1 in a single academic year.

Pharmaceutical Defence Limited Prize Year 1
Awarded annually to the student who demonstrates combined outstanding achievements in CSA155, CSA156 Pharmaceutical Science and Practice 1 and CSA101, CSA102 Pharmacy in Health Care. To be eligible for the award the student must have completed Year 1 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in a single academic year.

Judith Liauw Memorial Scholarship in Pharmacy
Available to a student entering their first year of the Pharmacy course who lives in the north-west of Tasmania. Preference will be given to a student who can show that the financial support of the scholarship would enable them to study pharmacy.

Pharmacy Undergraduate Scholarship
Available to applicants with a high achievement against UTAS Pharmacy entry requirements (ie. ATAR, prerequisite units; or other alternative entry requirements). This award may not be held with another scholarship.

The Pharmacy Cricket Scholarship
The committee of Pharmacy Cricket have announced the availability of two scholarships at $2500 each to any student studying at any pharmacy school or university in Australia. Applicants do NOT have to have any interest or involvement with cricket to apply. Applications are direct to Pharmacy Cricket.

The Rural Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme
The Scheme has been established to provide financial support to encourage and enable students from rural and remote communities to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies in pharmacy at University. There are up to 30 scholarships offered annually, with a value of $10,000 per annum per student (ie. $40,000 per student over a four year period). Scholarship recipients are encouraged to seek employment in rural and remote areas following graduation. This Project is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing as part of the Fifth Community Pharmacy Agreement. Applications are to be made direct to The Pharmacy Guild of Australia.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme
The aim of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme is to encourage Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies in pharmacy at University. It is acknowledged that if the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are to be adequately met by pharmacists, there is a need for more Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander pharmacists working in the industry. A total of 3 scholarships valued at $15,000 per annum for a maximum of four years are offered annually. This Project is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing as part of the Fifth Community Pharmacy Agreement. Applications are to be made direct to The Pharmacy Guild of Australia.


Second Year

The Gould Memorial Prize
The best aggregate in Pharmaceutical Science and Practice 2, Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry.

Guild Insurance Prize
The highest aggregate mark in second year, at the first attempt of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.

Australian Journal of Pharmacy Prize Year 2
Awarded annually to the student who demonstrates combined outstanding achievements in CSA255, CSA256 Pharmaceutical Science and Practice 2. To be eligible for the award the student must have completed Year 2 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in a single academic year.

Honours Scholarships
The School of Pharmacy offers honours scholarships to Bachelor of Pharmacy students interested in studying the Integrated Honours Program in their third year of study.

The Pharmacy Cricket Scholarship
The committee of Pharmacy Cricket have announced the availability of two scholarships at $2500 each to any student studying at any pharmacy school or university in Australia. Third Year

Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (Tas Branch) Third Year Prize
The best performance in the clinical round assessment in Third Year Therapeutics in Practice. To be eligible for the award, a student must have completed each unit of year 3 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy at their first attempt. Current Value:18 month student membership of SHPA (Tas Branch) and $150.

Excellence in Community Pharmacy
This prize is supported by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia (Tas). Students undertaking the third year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree are eligible to apply. Applicants will be required to write no more than 1,000 words outlining how and what they would do to provide excellent services in community pharmacy. Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (Tasmanian Branch) Prize
The best clinical case study in Clinical Pharmacy Residency 3. To be eligible for the award, student must have completed year 3 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy in a single academic year.

Australian Journal of Pharmacy Prize Year 3
Awarded annually to the student who demonstrates combined outstanding achievements in CSA355, CSA356 Pharmaceutical Science and Practice 3 and CSA351, CSA352 Clinical Pharmacy Residency. To be eligible for the award the student must have completed Year 3 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in a single academic year.

Jill Coleman Memorial Scholarship
Available to a female student studying third year pharmacy or second year in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology.

The Pharmacy Cricket Scholarship

Fourth Year

Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (Tas Branch) Fourth Year Prize
The highest result awarded for the written and oral assessment associated with the hospital placement in Fourth Year Pharmacy Practice. To be eligible for the award, a student must have completed each unit of year 4 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy at their first attempt. Value:18 month intern/pre-registration trainee membership of SHPA (Tas Branch) and $350 cash.

Tasman Pharmacy Prize
Awarded for the best assignment submitted as part of the assessment component for rural placement, combined with successful completion of unit CSA430. To be eligible for the award the student must have successfully completed all year 4 M3F units in their first attempt.

JC Burgin Memorial Prize
Awarded to the graduand who passes all units in year 4 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree course, having completed year four in a single academic year, and who demonstrates conscientiousness and commitment to the Pharmacy profession.

Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Tasmanian Branch) Gold Medal
Awarded for outstanding academic achievement over four years on a quantitative basis in the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, having completed all four years of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree consecutively at the University of Tasmania's Division of Pharmacy. Recipient must score a weighted aggregate mark in all four years of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree of 14 or above.

BJ Shirrefs Prize for Therapeutics
The prize will be awarded annually to the student obtaining the best overall results in Therapeutics 3 and 4, having completed Therapeutics 3 and 4 in the first attempt. The award will be withheld in any year if, in the opinion of the examiners, no candidate is deserving of it.

Westside Pharmacy Prize
Awarded for the best overall result in pharmacy practice. To be eligible for the award the student must have obtained the best aggregate mark in Pharmaceutical Science and Practice 3 and 4, having completed Pharmaceutical Science and Practice 3 and 4 in the first attempt.

Launceston United Friendly Societies Prize
Awarded for the highest mark over four years of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. To be eligible for the award candidates must have completed all four years of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in consecutive years at the University of Tasmania's Division of Pharmacy.

Pharmaceutical Defence Limited Prize Year 4
Awarded annually to the student who has a combination of high grades in CSA451 Clinical Pharmacy Residency and CSA430 Pharmacy Practice and who demonstrates skill and commitment in the field of Clinical Pharmacy. Eligible candidates for the award must have completed year 4 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in a single academic year.

LJ McLeod Prize (Fourth Year Honours)
Awarded annually to the student or students who present the best project in the integrated BPharm(Hons) program. Eligible students must have completed the integrated Honours program with 1st class Honours. The award will be withheld in any year if no candidate is deserving of it.

Johnston Rorke and Terry White Chemist Group Excellence in Pharmacy Management Award
Receive one day management training tuition in Brisbane, with winners of a similar award from other Australian Universities. Includes flights to and from nearest Australian capital city and accommodation. Students undertaking CSA451 are eligible to apply. Please email pharmacy@utas.edu.au for more information.

Symbion Prize for best Community Pharmacy Placement
Awarded for the best performance in fourth year community pharmacy placement based on submitted portfolios and preceptor report.

Symbion Prize for Communication Skills
Awarded to the student with the highest aggregate mark in fourth year (CSA455) pharmacy practice dispensing practicals.

George Taylor Scholarship in Clinical Pharmacy
Available to a student entering their 4th year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (including honours students) who can demonstrate an interest in pursuing Clinical Pharmacy.

Judith Liauw Postgraduate Fellowship
Available in 2013 for a female graduate of the UTAS Division of Pharmacy to undertake a Pharmacy Guild Intern Training Program (ITP) at a rural or remote location in Tasmania. The ITP must be commenced in 2013.

The Pharmacy Cricket Scholarship
