"Practicing and promoting health research in Fiji where the concept of laboratory-based medical research is at its infancy makes my job challenging, however my time at the University of Tasmania has given me the skills to pursue my research goals."
- Morgan Downes, Alumni.
I currently work as a research assistant at the newly established Medical Research Laboratory at the Fiji National University in the Fiji Islands.
Practising and promoting health research in Fiji where the concept of laboratory-based medical research is at its infancy makes my job very challenging, however my time at the University of Tasmania has given me the background knowledge and skills to pursue my research goals.
I undertook my Honours project in prostate cancer genetics and now I have diversified into HIV immunology research and pharmacognosy research in relation to dengue fever.
The highlight of my studies at the University of Tasmania was the units I took as part of my Bachelor degree. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about a diverse range of topics within the scope of medical research.
Another highlight for me was forming new friendships. I lived in University accommodation so I was lucky to mingle with a lot of different people outside of my classes and division. Tasmania is a great place to study. There is plenty to see and do in your downtime to escape university life if you need to.
A career in medical research will always be full of challenges, excitement and let downs but this is what makes it a fascinating career choice. It provides a constant learning opportunity and the continual chance to further oneself. It is also gratifying to know that the work that I do now in some way will contribute to help improve the health of others in the future. To those who are thinking of starting a degree in the field of health I would recommend selecting the University of Tasmania as your tertiary institute as it will give you a fantastic foundation on which to build your career. The academic staff are very helpful and approachable and the facilities are well equipped to give students the best learning environment.
