John Williams was foundation head of photography and film at Sydney College of the Art (University of Sydney) and Head of Department from 1975 until his (early) retirement in 1989. He completed a PhD in modern history at Macquarie University in 1992 and has since written a number of articles on modernity, war and culture and the five books listed below:

2009, Modernity, the Media and the Military. The creation of national mythologies on the Western Front 1914 - 1918, (Routledge, London).
Two monographs of his photographic work have also been published and his exhibition record includes one-person retrospectives at the Art Gallery of NSW and the National Gallery of Victoria.
