The School of History and Classics offers history majors in Hobart
and Launceston and by distance education, History 1 in Burnie, and
majors in Ancient Civilisations and Latin in Hobart. Thematic units
include units on classical literature and art, gender in history,
crime and the law in historical perspective, and history and heritage.
The School has an international profile in research. Study opportunities
are enhanced by the quality of its library holdings on classical
antiquity, medieval and early modern England, Australian colonial
history, and Tasmaniana. On the Hobart campus there is the John
Elliott Classics Museum, with an important collection of pottery,
sculpture and currency, while off campus there are the State Archives,
the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart, and the Queen Victoria
Museum in Launceston.
The School's Centre for Tasmanian Historical Studies publishes
Tasmanian Historical Studies and holds an annual conference.
