Dr Matt Driller, a graduate from HLS has contributed his expertise to the Australian Paralympic Team.
Dr Matt Driller, a graduate from the School of Human Life Sciences has contributed his expertise to a worldwide sporting event. In August/September this year Matt was lucky enough to be offered a place working with the Australian Paralympic Team at the 2012 Paralympics in London.
Matt has worked hard to achieve this opportunity in his career. After graduating from his Honours Degree in Sport and Exercise Science in New Zealand he went on to successfully gain a joint scholarship funded by the school of Human Life Sciences and the Tasmanian Institute of Sport (TIS) to undertake a PhD. This three year post graduate study focused on enhancing performance through training strategies and nutritional supplementation in rowers and cyclists.
“I gained valuable experience in applied sports science working with elite athletes at the TIS while at the same time was able to develop research skills learning about the world of academia at UTAS. It was great to have the balance between the two”, Matt advised.
Matt is presently enjoying his position at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra as a Physiologist specialising in recovery. “My role consists of 50% athlete servicing and 50% research. I have been working at the AIS for almost three years and have had some great opportunities to travel overseas with different teams” he said. One of the particular highlights has been working at the 2012 Paralympics this year.
Matt his retained ties with UTAS as a University Associate and is currently co-supervising a UTAS/AIS PhD student together with Dr James Fell and Dr Cecilia Shing who are his past Supervisors from the School of Human Life Sciences.
