Communities within the Tarime district of Tanzania will shortly benefit from the arrival of a container packed with resources from a caring Tasmanian school!
Students from Launceston Church Grammar School support the Peter Hewitt Care for Africa foundation by working tirelessly alongside other organisations around Launceston to raise both awareness and funding for projects to assist people in eight schools in the Tarime District of Tanzania.
Dr Marie Louise Bird from the School of Human Life Sciences at UTAS recently co-ordinated several boxes of teaching resources to donate to this worthy cause. These books will be utilised at the new resource centre which is one of the major community projects being undertaken at the moment. This centre will be the site where future nurses and teachers will be trained who will add to the skill base in this underprivileged area. “These resources will be welcomed with open arms” said Ms Bassano, Co-ordinator of the project at Launceston Church Grammar School – sometimes there can be up to 17 students sharing the same book”.
Grammar students will be packing the donated health science books into the large container destined for Africa this week in readiness for the long journey overseas. Some of the volunteer students from Grammar are planning to be there to unpack the container when it arrives at its destination and assist in the distribution of items throughout the community. They will also gain experience in in helping with the ‘Teach the Teacher ‘ program whilst in community in passing on skills that can be taught to the Tanzanian schoolchildren.
