Ireland & Tasmania 1848: Sesquicentenary Papers

Seven leaders of the Young Ireland Rebellion of 1848 and numbers of lesser insurgents ended up in Tasmania. The island state also hosted Australia's chief commemoration of the events of that year and the rebels' roles in it. Seven sessions analysed causes and effects, politics, poetry and prose, events and personalities, all with their Australian overtones - and undertones. The papers gathered here tell the stories, and retell the myths, while offering insights and analysis that connects Ireland with Tasmania, and 1848 to the present.

Convened by Richard Davis and Stefan Petrow and held at the University of Tasmania at Hobart on 3 October 1998 - the speakers were John Molony, Hugo McCann, Richard Davis, Mella Cusack and Stefan Petrow. Other participants recited poetry and sang ballads.
