Week 1: Introduction and History
Lecture 1:Introduction (Professor Andrew McMinn)
Welcome and outline of the unit. Focus on main themes running
through lecture series. Introduction to IASOS and the Antarctic
CRC. Outline science generic skills topics. Explanation of
assessment processes.
Lecture 2:Arcadia and Ice (Mr John Williamson)
This lecture sketches the association between Hobart and Antarctica from the sealing and whaling industries of the nineteenth century through to the early exploration and scientific investigations conducted during the first half of the twentieth century.
Lecture 3:Empire, Science and Glory (Mr John Williamson)
Between 1895 and 1916, a series of path breaking exploratory and scientific expeditions ventured south to Antarctica. Popularly characterised as the "heroic age" of Antarctic exploration, this era is replete with epic tales of achievement, ambition, endurance, valour and tragedy. This lecture examines the "heroic age", canvassing its controversies and assessing its significance.
