Performances

Margesti and Liswati of Teater Abu will present a performance piece entitled Siti Nurbaya Berlari-lari "Siti Nurbaya on the Run", a reflection on the stresses, contradictions and challenges facing contemporary Indonesian women. The work builds on the frenzied imagery of a recent Teater Abu production Mereka Bilang Aku Perempuan "They Say I'm a Woman".

Sirikit Syah, writer of novels, short stories and poetry, will read some of her poems in English and Indonesian.

Shinta Febriany, Makassar-based theatre director, will show excerpts from her stereotype-shattering productions namaku adam tanpa huruf kapital "my name is adam without capital letters" and hawa dari bawah tanah "underground eve", explaining how the plays came to be created and how they were received.

Bondan Nusantara will show excerpts from the ketoprak performance Bang-Bang Sumirat , which he wrote and directed. Staged in August 2005 in Bantul, Yogyakarta, to celebrate the anniversary of the region, Bang-bang Sumirat is set in a fictional Javanese kingdom but its real reference is the events of the 1965 supposedly Communist coup and its aftermath.
