Security Statement

School of Information Systems
University of Tasmania

[Last modified: 1999.04.13]

It is a condition of issuing a key or security code to a person giving access to the Information Systems Wing of the Centenary Building that they agree to abide by the following conditions and accept the following responsibilities.

Conditions

Ethical behavior in the use of keys, locks and general security in accordance with this statement is required from all persons who are given special access privileges to the Information Systems Wing of the Centenary Building.

Unethical practices committed by a student are considered to contravene the Statute of Discipline and will render the student liable to fines, suspension from study, suspension of access to the Centenary Building or cancellation of enrolment. Disciplinary action will be taken against anyone found violating these guidelines.

  1. You may only enter those spaces and use those facilities which have been authorised for your use.
  2. Any attempt to use access codes belonging to other students or staff is prohibited. (NB The attempt is a disciplinary offence, whether or not the attempt succeeds.)
  3. You must not let other people through a door using your access codes (or physical keys if relevant) unless granted permission by Information Systems Security Staff.
  4. Any attempt to interfere with the normal operation of any security facility is prohibited.
  5. You must maintain strict password secrecy for your access code and take precautions against unauthorised access; for example not entering codes while other persons can observe you.

  6. When the building is in secure mode, you should make every attempt to prevent access by unauthorised persons, for example by closing and latching external doors, and by reporting security breaches.
  7. On ceasing to be a student of Information Systems, you will return any physical keys to the school, and will refrain from using any electronic codes previously issued to you.

Responsibilities

You are responsible for reporting any action by another person which you consider may contravene the ethics of security use to university staff. Not to report such an action is to be a passive accomplice to any security breach or criminal activity.

You are also responsible for reporting any malfunctions in security equipment, so that repairs may be effected.

Urgent security matters, out of normal hours, should be reported by calling internally ext 7600. In all other cases, report the matter to Ms Kris Purton (Room C403, extn 2900).
