General admissions requirements

All students wishing to study at the University Tasmania (UTAS) must meet the minimum English language and academic entry requirements.

Some courses have higher English language or academic entry requirements, prerequisite subjects, or additional conditions such as portfolios or interviews. Check the course entry requirements for your desired course on our course and unit handbook page.

English Language Requirements

International applicants will be required to provide evidence of their English language ability.

For those applicants who are nationals of and currently residing in a country where English is NOT the official language, evidence of an accepted English language test must be provided (such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE).

Alternatively, applicants can provide evidence that English has been the sole medium of instruction and examination in their most recent studies, for a minimum of 2 years, and within the last 24 months. This will be assessed by the admissions staff.  Academic transcripts and a letter from your institution will be required.

Those applicants who are nationals of and currently residing in a country where English is the official language, may be exempt from the two-year validity period.

Academic Requirements - Undergraduate

Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires qualifications equivalent to the 12th year of schooling in Australia. We have provided a list of countries and their academic qualifications that meet the University's minimum entry requirements.

Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies and also meet prerequisite subjects if required.

You can view the entry requirements for your desired undergraduate program by searching for your course on our course and unit handbook page. Students who do not meet the undergraduate entry requirements at the University may be eligible for the UTAS Foundation Studies Program which can be used as a pathway into an undergraduate course.

Academic Requirements - Postgraduate

Admission to most postgraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree.

Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer.

Entry requirements for most postgraduate programs can be viewed by clicking on the links through the course and unit handbook.

Courses that have additional requirements

Some courses require specific academic and English requirements for entry. Please ensure you read the entry requirements for any course you intend applying for.
