English Language Requirements

From 14 September 2016 the University of Tasmania introduced a change to the TOEFL (iBT) scores for meeting English Language admission requirements . The adjustment has been made to bring them in line with other Australian university TOEFL  entry requirements.

  • All offers issued after this date, including  reissued offers and current offers will be subject to the revised scores.

For those applicants who are nationals of and currently residing in a country where English is NOT the official language, evidence of an IELTS or TOEFL test must be provided.

Undergraduate Programs

Most of our undergraduate programs have the following English language requirements.

  • IELTS (Academic) - 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5)
  • TOEFL (iBT) 72 (no skill below: Reading 10; Listening 9; Speaking 16; Writing 19)
  • PTE Academic 50 with no score lower than 42
  • UTASAccess-English Level 6 - 60% (no individual score less than 55%)
  • Cambridge CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) - B Grade
  • Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) - C Grade
  • Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificate) Higher - C Grade

Postgraduate Programs

Most of our postgraduate programs including Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters by coursework degrees have the following English language requirements.

  • IELTS (Academic) - 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL (iBT) 72 (no skill below: Reading 16; Listening 16; Speaking 18; Writing 22)
  • PTE Academic 50 with no score lower than 50
  • UTASAccess-English Level 7 - 60% (no individual score less than 60%)
  • Cambridge CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) - B Grade
  • Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) - C Grade
  • Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificate) Higher - C Grade

Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania

English Language Proficiency Requirements

In accordance with the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania English Language Proficiency Policy changes in January 2014, Section 13 of the Teachers Registration Act 2000, the University of Tasmania has increased the English entry requirements for the Bachelor of Education suite of programs and the Master of Teaching.

To be eligible for entry applicants must achieve an IELTS Overall score of 7.5, with no individual band for Listening or Speaking less than 8.0, and writing and reading no less than 7.0 (or equivalent).

AHPRA

English language requirements for graduates of Biomedical Science, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Psychology

It is mandatory for all graduates seeking initial registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to demonstrate that they meet the English language proficiency requirements by demonstrating an overall IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components including listening, reading, writing and speaking (or accepted equivalent).
