Institute for Regional Development

Higher Degrees By Research (PhDs)

The Institute for Regional Development places high value on postgraduate research training. To that end we sponsor several Elite Scholarships and host a small cohort of research students studying topics of regional development significance.

The PhD in Regional Development at the University of Tasmania is offered exclusively through the Institute for Regional Development.  The IRD also has a number of affiliate students studying within other University of Tasmania Schools or Institutes, whose work also focuses on some aspect of regional development.

Currently, the IRD has supervisory expertise in the following disciplines:

  • Regional Policy and Planning
  • Community Development
  • Anthropology of Development
  • Public and Private Sector Management

Our PhD candidates have typically had extensive community, regional or international development experience. They bring practical knowledge and insights to their academic work, to produce research that is both academically rigorous and relevant to the real concerns of regional communities.
