Coursework Coordinator and PhD Candidate.
Clayton Hawkins has experienced firsthand what it is like to be a first-in-family student from the Cradle Coast region and the barriers that students of this ilk face. Clayton is a key driver at the Cradle Coast campus for alternative pathway programs.
Clayton is the IRD’s coursework coordinator looking after the Bachelor of Regional Resource Management, Regional Science honours projects within the Graduate Diploma of Science with Honours and postgraduate units in the Faculty of Business on the Cradle Coast campus. He is a member of the a Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology T&L Committee and has a lead role in the development of new coursework courses for the campus that meet needs in the Cradle Coast region.
Clayton’s main research interest is in the area of leisure planning and policy where the concepts of social capital, informal leisure activity and the value of ‘place’ (especially ‘third places’) form the majority of the academic framework. He is a final-year PhD candidate with UTAS where his thesis has a working title of ‘Social Leisure Places: Creating and Extracting Weak-Tied Social Capital Through Place-Based, Informal Leisure Activity’. Clayton has extensive experience working in local government in the fields of sport and recreation, cultural and community development, community arts and event management and has won numerous state and national awards for his practitioner work. He currently holds Ministerial appointments as a member of the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board and as Chair of Arts Tasmania’s Assistance to Organisations Panel. Clayton is also a former elected representative in local government.
