After years of struggling to finish a degree in fields that did not grab my attention, I stumbled upon regional science. Having spent all of my life, except of 3 months, living away from big cities (including 3 years in Tasmania's Central Highlands) I was immediate drawn to this field of study.
Building strong communities is an important part of my interest in regional science. The most recent 'catch cry' in community development is community capacity building. Community capacity building is the dynamic, resilient and sustainable process which is working towards community improvement. This process is achieved by identifying and building upon skills, assets, strengths, abilities and interests which are already present within the community and by empowering all community members to participate in the process. In my honours thesis, I will be looking at how regional communities and community organisations understanding this concept.
