2013 Artist in Residence
Hobart-based visual artist David Edgar is the winner of the prestigious UTAS Cradle Coast Campus Artist in Residence program for 2013.
Now in its third year, the $5000 program offers local, national and international artists the opportunity to work in the North West region on arts projects with relevance to the local community.
UTAS Cradle Coast Campus Exhibitions Coordinator, Joanna Gair said that there was an overwhelming response to this year’s AIR program, including applications from six international, professional artists.
During the residency, David Edgar will be researching and working on drawings at North West locations, which will contribute towards an exhibition at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery in late 2013, and subsequently tour interstate. The project will also include public studio sessions at Burnie’s Makers’ Workshops as well as interactions with school groups and other artists in the region.
David’s work currently involves large-scale charcoal drawings of coastal geological formations.
“The work is dynamic, structural and enveloping. It’s exciting to think that David has never worked in our region before, and perhaps would never have ventured this far without the UTAS residency program,” Ms Gair suggested.
Applications for the 2014 UTAS Artist in Residence Program will open around August 2013.

Local Landscapes art exhibition
Burnie-based artist Meg Collidge is a painter with a passion for the cradle coast countryside:
“…my surroundings are dominated by the beauty of rolling red hills dressed in lush greens dancing up to the jagged coast.”
Meg’s enthusiasm for her subject matter is evident in the vibrant colours and rhythmic patterns she uses to create mesmerising landscape paintings which vibrate with energy. Over the past 12 months or so Meg has been working in her studio to create a series of fabulous paintings which play with the forms and colours of the region. Her exhibition “Local Landscapes” is the culmination of this work.
Exhibition opening: Thursday 8th November at 5pm, Atrium Gallery, UTAS Cradle Coast Campus, 16-20 Mooreville Road, Burnie
